After 12 years of designing homes, Shea and Syd McGee are taking on a completely new kind of design project: building the first McGee & Co. flagship retail store. And Shea is quickly realizing that designing a store is nothing like designing a house.
Welcome to Trolley Square: The Making of Our First Store, a new Studio McGee series following Shea and Syd behind the scenes as they transform a long-vacant space in Salt Lake City, Utah, into a completely new retail experience. We’re documenting the entire store renovation—from the first interior design plans and demolition through construction, furniture installation, styling, and the final reveal.
In Episode 1, we’re starting before demolition begins. The space was previously home to a Hard Rock Cafe and Wiseguys Comedy Club, and seeing its potential takes a little imagination. Shea walks through what stays, what goes, and her vision for working with the historic architecture, including the exposed brick, original steel trusses, vaulted ceiling, and natural light.
The goal is to create more than your average furniture and home decor store. Shea wants the McGee & Co. flagship to feel like walking into a Studio McGee home, with layered living room vignettes and individual spaces that show how furniture, lighting, art, and decor can come together. A dedicated Design Concierge area will also give customers a place to see samples, work with a consultant, and design an entire room.
Opening a physical McGee & Co. store has been years in the making. Now the plans are becoming real, the September deadline is approaching, and the challenges of renovating a historic commercial space are just beginning.
