He built his off-grid straw bale home for just $15,000, including solar panels and batteries, and 20 years later he’s still refining the system.
Dan Durica has lived at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage in Missouri for two decades, in a home he built himself out of local straw bale and earth.
Today his monthly costs are almost nothing: about $50/month to lease land from the community land trust, plus a few dollars to tie into the village’s micro-grid, which is now itself connected to the larger utility grid, giving him a backup layer he didn’t have in the early days.
His house runs on passive solar design and a simple daily routine rather than mechanical heating and cooling. In winter, he opens thermally insulated curtains on sunny days to let the sun hit his earthen floor, which acts as a heat sink and stores warmth for the evening, then lowers the curtains at night to trap it in.
In summer, the same curtains come down during the day to block heat, and windows open at night to cool the thermal mass back down. A small wood stove tops things off on the coldest days, but otherwise the house holds a comfortable temperature almost entirely on its own.
Food is just as dialed-in as shelter. Dan gardens extensively and grows nearly all of his own produce, and he’s shifted a lot of his protein and calories toward what he can actually grow himself: more corn flour (tortillas and tamales instead of wheat bread) and more dried beans.
To make a harvest last all year, he cans, pickles, ferments, and solar-dehydrates a large share of what he grows. He even makes his own cheese, using milk from Dancing Rabbit’s community milk co-op, which runs rotational grazing for cows, sheep, goats, pigs, and chickens across the land.
Twenty years in, Dan shares what’s worked, what he’d change, and what it actually takes to build this cheaply and live this simply and self-sufficiently, off the grid.
